On Friday, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran announced that 23,511 college students in Salem district received free laptops. At a ceremony at a private polytechnic college, the Minister handed out 859 laptops, and at another event in a government-aided school, he distributed bicycles to 442 students.
Speaking at the events, the Minister highlighted that the State government is running various schemes to support students' futures, such as Naan Mudhalvan, Pudhumai Penn, Tamil Pudhalvan, Illam Thedi Kalvi, the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, and Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil. He also mentioned that Tamil Nadu is home to 37 colleges in the top 100 colleges list and 24 universities in the top 100 universities list in the country. Over the past five years, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has allocated ₹2 lakh crore to the school education department.
The Minister also stated that 23,511 college students in Salem received free laptops, with 7,950 students from 23 government and aided arts and science colleges, medical and engineering colleges, and 15,561 students from 131 self-financing colleges benefiting from the scheme.
Additionally, 7,713 more students will soon receive free laptops. For the 2025-2026 academic year, 25,159 students in Salem, including 11,317 Plus One students and 13,842 Plus Two students, will receive free bicycles, with the distribution already underway.
