On Friday, Google released the first public beta of Android 17, allowing users and developers to get an early preview of the next version of its mobile operating system. The update focuses on improving performance, privacy, and tools for developers. Google also introduced a change in how updates are shared with developers, replacing the old "Developer Preview" with a continuous Canary channel.
Android 17 aims to improve performance and create a smoother user experience. The first beta includes updates that help manage background tasks better and improve battery efficiency. Google says these changes help apps run more efficiently, especially when multitasking.
The update also adds more privacy and security features. Users will have clearer control over how apps access sensitive information, such as location, microphone, and camera. New tools for media and camera apps will provide smoother transitions and more consistent audio levels.
Android 17 Beta 1 also supports the new Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard and adds restrictions on background audio, like playback and volume control, to ensure these changes happen only when the user intends.
For the user interface, Android 17 brings minor improvements, including smoother animations and better behavior for notifications and quick settings. Google has also made the system more compatible with large-screen devices, improving how apps scale and adjust to foldable phones and tablets.
Additionally, the update now limits the size of custom notification views to reduce memory usage, closing a loophole that allowed apps to bypass certain restrictions. This change will apply to apps targeting API level 37 and above.
